Abstract painting can be a means of expressing that part of human experience which is only felt, not seen. In constructing images, layers of paint are applied from a "plate" as in printmaking. The paint can be etching ink on mylar or acrylic film on canvas, paper or polyurathane. The process of application, first to a "plate" and then to the final substrate introduces the element of chance to the composition. The artist is working in reverse, like backward writing. Through this process control is sacrificed to magic. "Sacred Symbols" evolved from a fascination with a Chinese calligraphy drawing of a square, triangle and circle, barely overlapping, symbolizing the earth, the person and the divinity. |
